The Essential Psychology is a psychology of the transformation of being, based on the traditional teaching of the Hakim dervishes, which Idris Lahore has adapted to the men and women of today. Complementary to other psychological approaches, the Essential Psychology sheds new light, however, adopting as it does a wholly different perspective, that of the transcendence of the ego.
Once man has become aware of the limits of his personality, he seeks to come into contact with who he truly is, beyond his conditioning and the limits it necessarily imposes on him. “Who am I really, behind the mask?” becomes the crucial question for sincere seekers. According to the Essential Psychology, man forms part of a much larger context of creation, in which he occupies a very special place.
Through this study, man is able to acquire the consciousness and freedom that distinguishes real man from the state of ordinary man, identified as he is with his ego.
The areas explored in the Essential Psychology are diverse.
A few examples:
- Cosmogony: man’s place in the universe and his possible evolution
- The universal laws represented by the symbol of the Enneagram: the law of the triad and
law of the octave, common to all the great traditions
- A deeper way of working with our negative emotions
- The different energies of man and the conditions of an alchemical process of
transformation that leads us to our true self, by means of a genuine work of observation
This work of observation is indispensable to our inner development, and culminates
in true knowledge of ourselves.

Seminars
The Essential Psychology is taught in the context of the different workshops offered; in the short modules, in the form of an introductory conference or theoretical course, and in the longer programs, as a subject area in its own right. Thus counsellors and instructors in Gestural Euphony, Euphonist practicians, and participants in the Enneagram courses will discover the Essential Psychology in depth, finding in this way a response to many of their most pressing inner questions.
The seminars in Essential Psychology offered alongside the Enneagram courses or other certification programs (see dates) may also be taken separately.
It is recommended to follow the modules in the order given below. It is possible, however, to reverse the order of the first two modules.

Whatever method is used by a doctor, psychotherapist, or other practitioner of a helping profession, there are certain basic principles that are the prerequisite to any healthy human relationship, and that cannot be ignored in this type of profession. In this 2 x 4-day program, these indispensable basic notions will be taught and experienced.
Many practical exercises will be introduced to reinforce the theoretical material, enabling the participants to evaluate themselves and to determine their strong areas and the areas where they may need improvement. This module, like all the modules at the Free University, takes place in a climate of confidentiality and respect for each person’s individual rhythm.
These modules are required for certification as a Euphonist practician, but they may also be taken separately by people who are interested in psychology in its living dimension and its immediate practical application in our everyday life.
Module 1
- determination of one’s own life situation, belief-schemas that represent blockages, thought-schemas, and conditioning
- different scenarios - and how they can also be determined in one’s client

The traps in relationships of helping
- relation victim/savior
- phenomena of resistance
- the practician’s verbal and non-verbal attitudes
- the use of questions and reformulation, the different ways of approaching the problem
and solution
- signs of the practician’s (unconscious) non-acceptation of the client, and its

- professional ethics in the context of consultations
- tips for effective consultations
- what can be hidden behind our “desire to help”
Module 2
Indispensable basic notions:
- the different currents of personal development (and how to orient oneself)
- today’s notion of “normal” and “pathological”
- basic notions of psychopathology
- personality troubles (understanding and pinpointing them)
- dealing with groups (stages of life of a group, group phenomena)

anyone seeking tools in order to be able to communicate better with other people. Anyone who wishes to become more effective in his or her helping role. Any professional in search of simple techniques that allow us to overcome our difficulties in truly listening.
